Light Box Laboratories
In The Gallery
Light Box Laboratories is a therapeutic photography group for underprivileged and at-risk teens, founded and run by photographer Teresa Meier.
The course is designed to provide the opportunity for self-exploration and self-expression through photography and the opportunity to engage in a project designed to enhance community well-being.
Participants are given the opportunity to learn from local artists during scheduled guest lectures and studio tours.
The course concludes with a local exhibition of the students’ best work.
For the past three years we have been collaborating with Laura Stanley at Trillium Family Services to create Photosynthesis, a photo program for students of David Douglas High School.
Light Box Laboratories is meant to be an educational and therapeutic program for at-risk and underprivileged teens with the goal of creating a safe space where teens can express themselves artistically and get support and encouragement. The program increases
teenagers self-esteem and allows them to explore their identities and gain confidence and the skills necessary to contribute to a more diverse media landscape in the US.
In addition to helping teens, Light Box Labs supports emerging photographers by partnering with local colleges to provide internship opportunities to enhance the goals of all institutions involved. We are very fortunate that Light Box Laboratories was selected for Taking Focus, Inc.’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program. The sponsorship allows individuals or businesses to make a tax-deductible donation to Light Box Laboratories. Our goal is to raise funds to purchase equipment such as cameras, supplies for class projects, field trips, artist lectures, museum visits, and a gallery exhibition of the students' work.
